Question regarding venting of new pellet stove.

Hi. I am purchasing a new wood pellet stove. I currently have an Englander 55SHP10 pellet stove that runs like crap. I am looking at a Castle Serenity stove as a replacement. My question is, the vent hole placement on the back of each stove is different. The Castle stove vent holes are lower than the one I have which means the holes through my wall (it is direct vent through the wall) will be higher. Do I have to purchase a stove that will like up exactly with the holes in my wall or can I add an elbow to make it reach up to the hole? Thanks so much for your help!!

Welcome to the forum ! For exhaust, you can go higher just have to watch your EVL as you might have to increase pipe diameter as elbows con strict exhaust and collect a bit more ash. How long is your vent? Just short horizontal should be fine.

Thanks for the quick reply! The hole through my wall will be between 2 and 3 inches higher than the hole in the back of the stove. I have a standard kit on the outside of the house that consists of at least three feet of pipe up the side of the house.

EVL is calculated: 3' vertical = 1.5, T or 90* elbow = 5, 45* = 3, 3' horizontal = 3. Your shooting for EVL of 15 to 20 depending on the stove. Usually consider going to 4" if EVL is 15 or better. Should be well with in the parameters with the additional elbow needed to bring stove venting to height of existing. You may find you will need to clean venting more frequently with the additional elbow. Keep the OAK!

Yes Dan, that is the best. It was early when I read the post, and didn't have the time. Pavers or any 2" paintable block
would work for me. Maybe not for the wife. You know that deal.

Not sure what kind of protection the Serenity needs - ember or heat and ember. The guys are right as it wouldn't be hard to build a slightly elevated hearth pad. What is the Englander on currently?

I assume you already have a hearth pad from your old stove, so just add some blocks. If you absolutely have to, you can add an elbow though.

And if you wanted... you could make the perimeter solid, (like a rectangular donut), and paint them flat black...
pretty cheap...

I had made the same stove switch, Englander 25 pdvc to the Serenity. I chose to just move my vent because it was easy to do for me, but like mentioned easiest is building up the stove base.No doubt you will be very happy with the stove switch.

I assume his exhaust runs straight out the stove thru the wall, without any elbows or vertical rise (at least inside). I could be wrong though.
