Rain cap or NOT

Just wondering, Ive been noticing some chimneys around me do not have a rain cap? have they just blown off or is this a better way to burn?

Ive also notice some discoloration on mine I assume from burning lol....

anyway Thanx again for answering my sometimes dumb questions... Deer season starts tomorrow for me,,,,,,,,,,,,,, been a long year

Had a big situation across the road at my buddy's place this year..He doesnt have a cap on his chimney and we didnt clean it last spring, when he tried to start the stove this fall smoke filled the house and he had to put gloves on to get the wood outside as he could hear that dreaded rocket noise coming from the chimney What was left in the chimney last fall all collected in the elbow and blocked it off..We figure the rain washed the stuff down over the summer and he was lucky enough to catch it in time.

They are in their 80's so when i went up to check the chimney out it looked brand new

I wouldn't run my stove without one. Even though the chimney is SS I don't want rainwater collecting in the elbow that turns into the wall.
