After buying my first stove, a used St. Croix Afton Bay w/ analog control board, I got hooked on this web site. The more I learned the more into it I got. I change stoves like a junkie, always looking for nirvana.
I started buying used stoves to refurbish and resell and enjoy it immensely.
What have I learned over the last 6 years?
Simple is better.
Digital control boards are not all they are cracked up to be.I don't like the board setting the blower speed for me. I also know it was done for safety.
Keep your stove really clean and it will treat you well. Most people don't have a clue how to clean their stove properly.
The old Whitfield stoves were some of the best ever made and throw more heat than anything I have ever worked on.
My Advantage llT is a marvelous stove and I paid $175.00 for it. The Advantage lll is almost as good and I paid $300.00 for it.
My little Thelin Gnome rocks. Got that 1 for cleaning a stove.
St Croix makes a very good stove. I have had an Afton Bay and 3 York inserts and they were all good stoves.
Easyfire stoves have Thelin guts but are built like crap.
Breckwell is rightfully nicknamed Breakwell.
Reliant made a decent stove.
Waterford made a very good pellet stove.
Cumberland 3800 is way too complicated.
Enviro makes an excellent stove, I've owned 2.
Softwood pellets are too expensive and burn way too fast in most stoves.
Pellet prices are out of control.

Thanks Hearth.com

I too had a Whitfield Advantage, and loved it, still have it in the garage actually, I like my Harman Accentra insert except for the fan noise when on max.
I agree with you on the cleaning of these things being vital in their performance and reliability.

no Harman?

No I haven't had the pleasure. Guess they don't break down. Haha. Also like the Travis stoves and the Quads. Worked on both.

I have to agree that Breckwell is Breakwell but I've had mine for 7 years and it still heats my house. How often do you need to replace the burnpot on a stove? I think mine is ok but it has been burning for 7 years. Thanks.
