Dr. Sarah Parcak may have found a new Viking site in North America at Point Rosee, Newfoundland. How'd she do it? By satellite! http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/vikings-newfoundland-1.3515747

She won the TED $1 million prize to be used for research of her choice ... it looks like it will be to prevent looting of tombs in Egypt. Egypt archeological sites are not the only ones being looted... Peru & China among others. Always neat to see technology used in a novel way!

Gonna take a lot more than a million to protect artifacts in the Middle East anymore. The destruction going on is mind boggling. Somebody landing RPGs into the Pyramids is looking ever more a possibility.

After ISIS, they found Palmyra, Syria antiquities more intact than anticipated. Senseless loss but not total destruction. At least trying to stem some of the tide of loss is better than seeing artifacts all go to the black market unfettered. With the $1 mil prize, it`s more of a budget for the work than she had;)
