Found this really impressive program while checking out Pet Finder - mention of the young dog being placed at the Alger correctional facility for training. The concept has so many positives - for the inmates, the dogs, the future owners. Seems there are several of these programs in the United States.

An exceptional program is based out of New York State - Puppies Behind Bars.

They train labs to become service dogs for veterans with PTSD or Brain Trauma. They also train explosive sniffer dogs. Any dogs that are not found suitable for the program are available for adoption. From reading the newsletters, the service dogs make a huge difference in the lives of these disabled vets. Volunteers are needed for outside socialization. If the desire is there, donations can be made. If you know a vet that could benefit from a service dog, applications are available on the website.

Happy 4th!
