So after the fresh snow last week I found ash and soot in a 4' spot under the vent. It wasn't covered but a lot of it. The only thing I have done out of the ordinary was crank it up on 5 for a few hours to bring up the house temp after I was away for a few days. Normaly it's on 3 all the time. Anyone else have this? Maybe I just never saw it before (note it was two days before weekly cleaning)

Its possible the increased air flow that happened when you cranked it up blew out some of the ash that had accumulated in your vent.

Not to uncommon to get some black soot blown out. Venting get cruddy if you have done a fair amount of startups and cool starts seem to be the culprits of this, not good hard running.

And it's not cold enough for hard running yet so that must be it

It's fine ash being carried out through the exhaust. Normal.
