Stihl 026 Problem

I was using my Stihl 026 when the chain suddenly stopped. I took the side cover off and found this:






What happened?

Can it be fixed relatively easily?

What parts would I need?

My stepson was using it last and ran it with the chainbrake on. (I didn't know you could even do that.) I'm assuming that didn't help the saw much and may have led to this.

I'm hoping for a simple cheap fix, but I know sometimes that's an oxymoron. Thanks for any help.

Looks like you need a new rim and chain brake , not to bad a fix .

Looks like the debris forced or broke of the C-clip and the rest is what you see there. The clips are cheap and so are the sprockets are too, the chain brake mech, not sure...
I had a similar situation with my 441 where long grass or hay had built up behind the washer behind the c-clip. I could not pop the c-clip off to clean it. I didn't want to be too rough with the clip and break the notch. I didn't realize the grass was there and put just a bit more pressure and the clip broke in 2. It didn't happen when running but it broke from the pressure of me and the grass.

Suggest getting an Oregon Powermate kit for it, lots cheaper than the OEM one, but still a nice piece. About $20 or so, should have most of the bits you need. Chain break, might wanna check ebay to see if you can find a good used one, or maybe chainsawr?

Take it to your local dealer - toss it up on his bench and ask "what do I need to fix this thing". He probably has all the stuff on the shelf to get the job done.

That's what I've decided to do. I'm bringing it in tomorrow after work and see what the dealer says. I like supporting the local guys, plus they're a pretty good shop.

Just got back from the dealer. The total was around $25 for the parts I needed. That includes the brake band, new rim, washer, and e-clip. I also got a new needle bearing since I'll have it apart anyway, might as well replace that too. Thanks for all the help!

Everything that he had going wrong with that saw is considered a consumable part. It would be akin to a mechanic carrying oil on the shelf. And luckily, pretty cheap parts.

Ahh, I read that as a spur sprocket, not a rim. Hence why muh dollars is off....
