Was on a sunset scrounge last night with my old faithfull 041AV. Noticed the air filter cover knob spinning wildly as I was cutting. Went to tighten it and found that the stud broke. I held the cover down as best I could with my thumb to finish the load. I got the broken piece out of the bottom part of the filter housing once I got back to the shop and was thinking to fab up a new one or repair the old one.
I have now decided to replace both the stud and the air filter. The filter is the original vintage '82, 29 yrs. and counting. Found both parts on ebay but at different sites. Anyone here have these parts available for sale or can you recommend a place for me to go? Would like to single source these and save some shipping if possible.

Put a wanted ad on craigslist for an 041. Prolly pick up a parts saw CHEAP. Stihl made a ton of those 041s in the day.

Gary, We have only 1 Stihl dealer here that would be in business long enough to possibly still have this stuff in stock. I think these went out of production in the late 80's. I will check, you never know.


Lee, A junk 041 would set me back probably a C note or so and then I'd just have to spend money and get it runin' . I'd really like to move up to a 360/361/362.
This old Farm Boss just refuses to die!

I'd check a dealer, even a newer one. Sometimes they shock you with their costs (in a bad way) and sometimes they shock you with their costs (in a good way)

I went to find a carb rebuild kit and was shocked to find that it was like 22 bucks or something. The deaker said "I wouldn't waste my time on that rebuild, just buy a new carb for 28 bucks"... I wouldn't have even thought to ask. (BTW, this is the lady that works at the Farm and Home Supply Store here. She is always on top of everything I ask. Not to change the thread's topic, but it's refreshing to see such a knowledgeable woman working at the Stihl Counter.)

Thanks Danno I'll give them a try. I was looking at it again and I may just fabricate another stud and reuse the air filter, it works fine as is.

If Stihl parts are NLA, then try scott (dejardin?) chainsawr.com no e I think it is northwoods saw supply, in the NE USA. One of the biggest 'chainsaw junkyards'. Unfortunately, most products, including saws, have one or two weak points or highly sought after part. Hopefully that isn't the scarce part on this saw.

I will check with them. I always had a suspision that the stud was a little too long. I think this would have caused the cover to vibrate and weaken the stud. It broke right above the shoulder.

I sold my older Stihl AV saws after I had a hard time finding parts for them. None of the dealers that I go to here stock many of those parts any more.

I did check with the dealer. He just sold 2 parts saws and someother stuff to a person who passed himself off as a collector. The dealer saw alot of what he sold to the guy on e-bay.

I eneded up getting a piece of metric all thread and making my own part. I will see how it works once I start cutting again in the spring.


A 360/61/62 is in the works as soon as the 041 gives up the ghost.

Having run all three of those, I wood recommend the 361... best saw Stihl ever made.
