Anything is better than nothing...there are awesome surge protectors out there but they cost bigger $$$...keep in mind that you are protecting a multi thousand dollar investment...don't go cheap on a surge protector....A better bet is a UPS that with smooth out the highs and lows in the incoming power and protect against surges and short power outages.... just saying...

Good plan.. get a 1500va model though ( it needs enough "juice" to run the stove for a few minutes during a brief power outage )... its about $179 Cdn at Costco... likely a lot cheaper in the US of A.
 
You beat me to it! That is indeed a GFCI, not a surge suppressor.
