I want to add a thermostat to a astoria bay insert. It does allow the option. But I have not been able to find good info on the type of thermostat I would need to purchase. Can it be programmable as long as its 24v? is there more info I need to know?

Based on your manual, the thermostat you need is a mechanical one. It is nothing more than an on/off switch. Home Depot or Lowes has them cheap cheap. However, that is a wired stat. You don't need a 24-volt system stat. If you were looking for a wireless set up you could use something like a Skytech wireless.
