+1 for cottonwood (Populus)
 
It's free,looks like an easy job, it seasons fast, burns hot, doesn't coal up,
when seasoned it's easy for the ladies to handle, whats not to like.

Cottonwood.......not worth the calorie expenditure. Ok for campfire wood, but that is about it in my opinion. Ask me how i know this........
 
Not that bad for shoulder season and I'll take it over box elder. I have huge splits of it seasoned 5+ years that burn surprisingly long.
