What is the difference in a type L-vent and a type-A vent? Is the the difference in the pipe construction or the way that the pipe is installed?

Thanks,
Danny

The primary difference is temperature rating. Class A or Type A vent pipe (UL103) is temperature rated for 1700 deg needs a clearance of 2". There's also class A HT ( UL 103HT) that's rated at 2100 continuous temp. This is what's used for wood, coal and some oil burners. Type L pipe is rated at 570 degrees, needs a clearance of 3" and is used for high-efficiency oil, pellet stoves and some gas units. It can't be used with wood fired stoves.
