I am looking to purchase a used VC woodstove and have the option between a Vigilant stove, which the current owner claims to be wood (but has a grate) and a Vigilant 1977 (which has no grate). Please help me determine which is the correct one for our purposes.

i would think if one of those stoves has a grate that rocks back and forth from a handle outside the stove, that one should be a coal stove.

The early Vigilants were set up to accept the coal grate option which could be purchased separately from Vermont Castings.
