Question:
I have a Vigilant-W Vermont Castings wood stove, serial #612095-C . I have just replaced the door and grill gaskets. Can you tell me please, the depth of the Refractory Cement and should it be in it dry form in the bottom of the stove. Can you use sand as a substitute for the cement
Answer:
In the US , this stove never had Refractory in the bottom. Ash (depth of 1 to 1 1/2) or sand was used to protect the bottom castings. Canadian models may have come with cement due to varying codes. You can simply mix some up with water and pour about 1 on the bottom..or, just use the sand and ash.
