It's age. The side burn plates are sacrificial. They should be replaced at this stage to avoid damaging the stove sides. Was the baffle temporarily removed for this picture or is it missing?

thank you, the top baffle is just removed but does exist! appreciate it
The baffle forms a roof on the side burnplates. They, together with an inch of sand on the floor, protect the stove body. I added a rear burn plate to our F602 for additional protection of the stove. This had to be custom fabricated.

thanks, there seems to be many back plates out there, the 602s and more that are bulging out and cracked. a rear burn plate seems like a good idea if it does not alter the function in a bad way
