What is the this tool? Looks like a prybar to me, being sold as a "maul".

it is a splitter, you place the wedge on the log, then the handle slides up and you slam it down. like a slide hammer

Also known as a slap hammer. Smaller ones were / are used to pop auto ignition switches from cars.
 
My dad has a home-made version. He keeps it on the front porch to split pieces that might need to be a little smaller to fit in the stove. He likes it since he can easily use it under the roof and not worry about swinging a maul and taking out a ceiling fan!
