Direct vent prefab gas fireplace. What is this white fabric thing at top front of firebox? What is the purpose and does it need changed? Above it outside of firebox is some kind of plate with 2 bolts and springs which don’t seem to have a purpose. Appreciate some help. Thanks

Looks to be a gas pressure expansion joint. It’s a mechanism which will mitigate the chance of the glass on the front of the unit from exploding due to a buildup of gas prior to ignition. It will relieve pressure in the firebox. No need to change anything.
