What size copper tubing should I use to install sidearm heat exchanger on domestic hot water heater?

I need to install my sidearm heat exchanger on to the domestic hot water heater which is 62 gallons. What size copper tubing should I use? I have some 1/2 inch tubing available. The fittings on the sidearm have 3/4 inch pipe thread. I can't find any specific information on this in other places I have looked, even though they have some videos and good schematics.
