Wife lit first fire LOL

Wife can run lit stove fairly well, and we had discussed teaching her how to load and start stove, including a brief mention of a "top down" fire lay. She decided to give it a go the other day as I napped, a few locust splits with the sunday paper on top!
light it and forget it till 30 min timer goes off....Right?

Ladies out there, ain't hatin' on the fairer sex, my fault for not schooling her. To her credit, she did trap a big black widow in the kitchen with a pint glass the other day, and has approved this message.

Get that woman some Super Cedars and step back! FWIW, I light the fires and run the stove in our house. My husband is the poster child for Absent-Minded Professors and has yet to remember to close a door or drawer in 15 years of marriage, so he's not allowed near the stove

hahaha... Sounds like a lucky guy! I'm glad she's into learning how, though.
I am an absent minded Professor (well, HS Teacher anyway...) So much more of these type stories are told by her, such as :

The only problem I have with the Wife startin' the fire is.....she burns all the kindling first, then throws on only smaller splits, leaving nothing but bigger splits in the stacks.....now I gotta start splittin' the biggies, into littles again

I like her method of just laying the news paper in there then lighting, Oh well at least she tried. We all learn on here everyday. I plan on teaching the wife some burning tactics very soon as well.

Thanks for the pic. I must admit I laugh pretty hard, out loud, in a crowded convention hall.
My wife has decided that its my job to start it, so Kudos to your wife for trying.

Take the time to go over starting and she should do well. Be sure to advise her to set a timer and watch the fire when starting. It's easy for a busy person to get distracted, myself included.

We have to do a lot of starts during shoulder season, so I always make sure there is plenty of dry kindling, newpaper and some supercedars by the stove to make starting easy for my wife. She usually does pretty well. I also make sure that the locust doesn't come out until the stove is burning 24/7 and then still make sure there are some fir splits available for starting and cooler reloads.

She will progress, my wife is failry decent at starting a fire and keeping it going. Although im still like a little kid pyro and I just prefer to start them myself so she doesnt get all the practice she could.

I love when some of my non wood burning buddies come over and there is a fire going and she will go to re-load the stove and start telling them about the secondaries and such, brings a tear to my eye. There is hope for a city girl!

My wife has never been good at starting fires but when we got super cedars she did great. But time seems to dim the memory banks and even though I did not think it possible, she tried to start a fire this fall and even used a super cedar....and it didn't work. Wow! I'm still amazed. Anyway, I dug out the mess she had in the stove and started the fire for her.

I run the stove, too. I keep trying to teach the rest of the family, but they want no part of it. They will help me when I go pick up scrounge, though. Sp I can't complain.

Get her an estwing fireside friend - 4 pound splitting maul and she won't have to go to the gym any more....best excercise ever I have found.

My wife operated our Lopi Liberty (most definitely including lighting fires) as well or better than I ever did/do. Quite frequently she'd be up earlier in the morning than I, and she'd have a wonderful fire going when I finally dragged my lazy butt out of bed. She also genuinely enjoyed stacking split firewood...said that to her it was like Yoga or Tai Chi (both of which she practiced)...relaxing and conducive to meditation. Rick

I start at least as many, if not more, fires than DH. I am here and he is not. Splittting is all him though.

I am slowly getting a full grasp of our Jotul F-50 from last winter. It is easy to operate but definitely has a mind of its own on occasion. The wife says you get used to operating this stove then show me the quirks ! She knows how to run a stove but is terrified to mess up because this is by far the nicest stove we have owned and she would feel terrible if something went wrong. So she is starting to use it this winter. Acctually she may not no it but she is better at it than me usually just not the lighting part there I am king just keep telling myself that and I wont need as much beer
