a reviewer on amazon cites 'not good programs for a working family'. can you offer any more details on that?

Had mine for the last six years. Other than replacing the batteries every year, never had any problem. Requires reading the manual to understand how it works so I suspect those that were disappointed did not want to learn how to use it. IMO. It also depends on what you mean by programmable.

I need a couple cycles a day..... like on morning, down for leave, up for dinner arrival, down for sleep
 
I need to clarify here. I have the 5301 and not the 5301P. I know nothing about the programmable side of the that unit. However, here is the link for the owners manual.

As far as install goes they are just like a regular thermostat install. A couple of wires to the block on your stove and you are good to go.
