It is a charred oak barrel used for wine making normally.
1.23 gallons.Yup, interesting. I knew the barrels used in large-scale wineries were generally close to 60 gallons, or so. (Some wineries covet the barrels previously used to age whiskey). The scale here is hard to judge with confidence, but this guy looks to be a good deal smaller to me. So, good old Google has just shown me that there are specialty barrel makers (Coopers) today who cater to the home winemakers...offering charred oak barrels in a number of small sizes. Interesting, indeed. Rick
AH...but you're trying to get us to guess what it's current function is...into what service has this little keg been pressed...hmm. What could be inside there? I'd still like the dimensions, or at least a photo of it next to something that gives it scale.
