I'm sure there are plenty of threads going here about how great it is to have wood heat when the power goes out...

We just got power back an hour ago... in the meantime, I have been forced to kick it old-school. Now I know where that saying "I spent all day slaving over a hot stove!" comes from.

Tonight is chicken tacos. I know, the power is on, but I already prepped everything to cook on the 30 anyway, so might as well.

Pic 1: first try- hot dogs.
Pic 2: got brave- pot roast in cream gravy
Pic 3: got lazy- bananas on toast.

Yummy. Although, I'm not sure about the bananas on toast;lol. My wife is actually looking forward to our first major power outage here. She's a survivalist at heart. (Okay, so am I;))

Glad you weathered the storm okay.

Actually, the 'nanners were awesome with a little butter on the toast, plus some brown sugar and cinnamon.

Wait till tonight's tacos!

Oh, well, you didn't mention the cinnamon and sugar:cool: ! I take it back.

Another good thing when power goes out is it tends to let the family spend some time together. Oh how I pine for the days when our sons were growing up and we'd spend time with them. Not much tv in that house and even less now. Much better to do things with the family.

Excellent point. Goes to simple pleasures. I have good memories of hunkering down, too.

wow thats pretty cool, now i am hungry, growing up my dad would make a pot of chili on the old grizzley stove. glad you r safe .

Long term power outages cause unplanned pregnancies, at least at my house.<>Got two generators now and wife if "fixed"

;lol Oh, that is funny. I have heard statistics that suggest you are not alone.

BTW, don't let your wife see this post. That characterization may not sit well...

Good to see that folks here can make it thru power outages & have fun doing it. ;)

Looks good.

Aaaaaand it's dinnertime...

Chicken thighs, sliced up, marinated in a plain old envelope of taco spices
Black beans, an onion, a jalapeno, some chili powder, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, and red wine vinegar
Cast iron comal pan on a 550 stovetop
Corn tortillas grilled right on the stovetop to hold it all...

Wow, I'll be right over. That looks delicious.

What are you doing for refrigeration?

I am seriously considering buying a standby generator. I like my wood stove but it doesn't draw water from my well and I am not a survivalist at heart.

Good going though. You might write a cookbook for wood stoves ha.

I cooked up a pound of bacon in the microwave six hours before the power went out and put it in the freezer. Along with a dozen biscuits, a baked chicken, some brats, sausage patties...

The power was out for two hours. Amazing since the trees were bent over like grass blades all night.

That sounds great - do many similar dishes, but never used vinegar in them. Gonna next time!
