This was posted locally on CL today. I got a kick out of it. I would certainly stop scrounging if I could buy Doug for $50 a cord. Maple is more expensive, even in this rant here, but local (big leaf) maple has less heat (15% fewer BTUs) than Doug fir.

IT IS HOT OUT WOOD SHOULD BE CHEAP - $50 (per cord)

Come on now CL people, it is 84 out and your still trying to sell firewood at winter prices.
I hope you keep all of your overpriced wood.
Maple should be at the most 80.00 per cord
Fir should be 50.00 per cord
THIS IS SUMMER PRICES SHOULD BE CHEAP!!!!

impala, firewood, fire wood, cheap cheap cheap, you rip offs, cutlass, stihl, hot, common sence

It does get old seeing all the adds for unseasoned wood at 180-250 a cord. I guess 60 a cord is the most I would every pay, and that is delivered. There is just too much free stuff out there that people are dying to get rid of or even pay 100 bucks to have it taken

Some people think they have gold, or at least that's how they price what they want to sell. When they look to make a purchase, it's usually something along the lines of, " that's outrageous! How can you be serious about that price?"

When it comes to the wood guys, they are the same as the oil guys. Don't drop the price too much because then everyone will stock up and they won't be able rip us off like they do in September. Even pellets stay high in the off season. It is a matter of supply and demand, and they can hold the merchandise on property that has no other use and wait till the price is high. They bank on the fact that you do not want three or more cord of wood sitting on your property from May until next spring. This is especially the reason wood is so high in the suburban lot areas.

Cutting, splitting and stacking is its own reward. Besides saving money, there is a satisfaction, I find, that keeps with the feeling of self reliance. Kind of like the same feeling when I'd go hunting. There is the knowledge that if the s*%t ever hit the fan, I could probably, along with my family, survive for a while. In this day and age it seems like that is a dwindling attribute.

True, BUT
Would you sell your CSS wood for $60 / cord? Charge for delivery?

Say there's 3 to 4 hours of work in a cord of CSS wood. (6 to 8 hours + for me.)
Physical Work, not typing on a keyboard.

Then I spend 6 hours+, liming, bucking, loading unloading a cord. then add in fuel & equipment costs.
Then split it, couple / 3 hours there, then stack it, hour or so there.
Load & deliver & off load, I guess yo want that free too

$60 , give me a break. Cut you own wood ! Not even close to minimum wage !

(& while your cutting your wood, cut 6 cords for me at $60/cord every year ;) )
& if you promise to do it for 10 years, I'll sell my saws, trailers, splitter to pay for it . ;)

I'd have unseasoned wood I have to season for 2 years. !
So I need 3 years worth starting out at $60/cord

Actually I'd resale it for $250/cord ;) LOL ;lol
I'm 3 years ahead , & know the work involved.

I heard a rumor that you wood not sell your firewood to us Oregonians driving by up there at any price though?!?!?! :p

My labor is worth more than $250 / cord. So your're right.
Not getting my seasoned wood for $250

But if you cut & deliver 18 cords for me at $60/cord.
I 'd sell it for $235 + delivery charges.
You come pick it up, & load it. $210/cord
:)

We see some DOOSIES on CL around here too. My favorite one thus far was the ad last year in a neighboring town. Guy had two huge (and I mean HUGE) trees right up against his house that he wanted cut down, FOR FREE.

Here's the kicker......if you cut them down, took ALL THE LEAVES AND BRANCHES (one tree was a sugar maple, one was a white pine), cleaned up every square inch of his yard when you were finished, and didn't do ANY damage to his property, he would give you the wood at no charge.....

I was gonna call and mess with him for 10 minutes or so, but I was laughing too hard at the ad to do it! He posted that ad again and again and again last year, I haven't checked to see if he has it posted this year or not yet......

:eek::eek:

I sell wood at $225/cord and I can't keep up with the demands!

Yah, we have those ads here all the time too. Huge trees growing near house, must have license, be bonded and insured, and take all the brush away and you can have the wood, FOR FREE!

Or worse, they are posting in a 'tree city' saying that you can have the wood for falling trees in their yard. Thing is, in those towns its like a $5,000 fine to fall a tree w/o a permit, and the one doing the falling is the one that gets the fine!

Gee, and I thought some of the stuff listed on eBay was a joke.

Burning diapers in an OWB? No wonder they are screaming to have OWBs banned in NE!

Its posts like these here that inspired the OP on CL. This guy wants $2,100 for 5 cords of apple, delivered. That is $420 a cord *cough*

http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/for/3785825709.html

The pictures are inspirational for any firewood hoarding overkiller, but the price? I can get seasoned madrone delivered here for $300 a cord and it is better wood (30 M BTU vs 26 for apple).

Canada? I have to drive through Canada? I have to find my passport, empty my truck of all my guns, and... wait a minute... no guns? No can do. Damn, I missed out on another good firewood deal.

holy crap 420/cord i wouldnt even bother burning...

I get logs 80/cord delivered mixed hardwood, its a time thing, I dont have time to scrounge but like chopping and splitting
170-180 for green and 225-250 for seasoned hard wood seems like a fair price cut, split, delivered

and yeah I have seen lots of those free wood, or chop this tree down next to my house and I'll let you keep the firewood ads
another favorite is people with old-chitty barns that are about to fall over who want $xxxx for the half rotten barn boards and you have to remove entire barn and all debris...
