Ok, they aren't much compared to some of you guys..probably most of you guys, but here are the wood racks I have at my house.

Far rack = Elm and little ash for this year
Near rack = Poplar and some pine (late winter shoulder season)

Box Elder and Aspen (early winter shoulder season)

Far rack = Silver Maple and Ash (2013/2014)
Near rack = 2014/2015

Silver Maple (2013/2014)
Also the last piece of elm that I'm hand splitting is awaiting my maul!

Silver Maple and Ash (2013/2014)

I am putting together another rack next to this last one for the rest of the dead elm I'm taking down. Hydraulics will be employed!

Wow, that axe looks as old as that car! Is that a steel handle? Ouch?

Nice racks!

Nice racks. Hey,they don't have to be pretty, just have to work. Those actually look good. Keep going!

Good looking racks. A lot nicer than mine.

Yes, the maul came with the house...even before I had a stove I had a maul. I guess I figured since I have a maul, why not get a stove.

It's heavy and I have to where gloves to keep it from flying from hand but it gets the job done...and it's orange!

Yeah, they are pretty simple. Stacked a little higher it's about a face cord worth.

That is a "monster maul". Good for splitting wood, granite or old cars. If your shoulders are up to it.

You are right on...and you ought to see what they do to the neighbor cats....joking, only joking!

Schlot, very nice looking, tidy racks! Looks like you are in good shape for quite a while, how many cord do you go through in a heating season? Do you heat exclusively with wood or do you just supplement with wood? Keep up the good work, my man!

Monster maul.....got love it. I used to split about 5-6 cords a winter with mine. Mine has a rubber grip on it. Those are fine looking wood racks, not a thing wrong with those.

Michelle my Woodpile Panther is not amused. ;lol

Thanks. The last two winters I ran short, but I'm estimating 2 cords should do me.

I try to heat about 80% with wood. Really cold nights and days I'm away with work (my bride is a little skittish on feeding the stove still) are when we go back to natural gas.

I split a groundhog's head in half yesterday with a 20 guage shotgun....and no, I'm not joking......>>

...hence the splitting headache he complained about?

My wife was my biggest skeptic when I put the stove in our house.....now, she'd KILL me if I got rid of it!

It takes a lot of time for some people to be able to trust a fire in the house....but eventually, once you learn all the good habits (and you are doing just that) of burning properly seasoned wood, taking care of your stove and flue, etc, then you can begin to totally get away from other fuels and go strictly to wood. I fire my gas furnaces up twice a year.....once in the fall to make sure they work, and once again in the middle of winter, just in case.....

We do all wood, all the time. And thanks to the great input of the guys and gals on this site, I've become a pretty darned good woodburner. So has my wife. We've both got the scars on our forearms (from the stove) to prove it!!;lol

Hated cats my whole life. Not that crazy about dogs either and never had a pet for 61 years. Then the little girl showed up in the stacks one day five years ago maybe a year old and a wild runaway. Took us four months to make friends.

And as they say, the rest is history. Laying by the chair wanting back out as I type.

I originally called her Barack, it was during the summer of the 2008 election. After we got to be friends I noticed I needed to change the name to Michelle. >>

I never liked cats....don't know why, but I just didn't like them.

That said, our neighbor's cat thinks he is a dog. Friendliest damm cat I've ever seen in my life. Just the other night we were sitting around the campfire in the dark out in the back yard when I felt something furry rubbing up against my leg....I about jumped out of my chair!

It was that damm cat! After the scare, he jumped up on my lap and sprawled out like he owned the place! You just can't help but like that bugger......

Hijacking the thread but that is what happened with me. She was wild and skittish and living on her own here in the woods. I would put out food and move it closer every few days while I sat in a lawn chair by the stacks. One day after four months of this drill every afternoon for my after work entertainment she finished eating and walked over and jumped up in my lap. You could have knocked me over with a Poplar split.

Nice looking racks, nice and tidy. Gotta ask what are those white labels/signs on the racks? do you label your racks as to what year you plan on burning them?

Yeah I figured those were labels for type and when stacked.

I will pass on my usual bar coding the splits joke this time.

Thanks. Yes I do. It's the anal retentive part of the engineer in me. I have to label the two racks in the first picture yet, but I just got done stacking the elm one today. It's just kind of fun to remember back where they came from. Gives me pause to appreciate those who let me scrounge their land.

Odd...that's how I got my wife to like me...small world
