Feeling the Heat

My wood reserves have been exhausted. I am out of wood for the year, unless I get a load from CL.

Burned 7 face cord this year.

I'm out of dry wood as well. I have plenty of recently split stuff, but nothing burnable. With snow in the forecast for tomorrow, and lows in the 20's for the next few days, the power company will get my money this month.

I hear ya. I'm not out, but I've burned WELL into "next year's wood".
I knew I was a little on the light side for what I had in this year's stack, but I started the season by burning nearly a half cord of silver maple left over from the previous year, then burned through everything I had for this year (almost all Oak) and dug deep into next years stack of Black Locust & Sycamore. I am now finishing up some semi-punky Silver Maple that was next years shoulder season wood. Once that's gone (2 weeks?) I think I'll call it quits & burn gas. Need to save the rest of my good stuff for next winter.

I'm recovering from a back injury, but I'm gonna have to get very busy scrounging once I'm able to move rounds again. Everything that was set for '15-16 is Red Oak and will not be ready to supplement next year's stacks.

Lesson learned from the first really hard winter in this place.

I can definitely relate to the back injury thing. I make it a point to "scrouge when the scrounging is good".
I never know if wood will come along at the same time my back allows me to get it.

I'm half way into next year's supply and I have to slow down. Worried what i will burn next year but I have plenty of wood for 2 yrs. away.

Yep, I'm going to be taking this into account when assessing what I need to stay three years ahead. _g I don't exactly know what is this year's wood and what is next year's; Don't know for sure how much I've taken over to feed the Buck. I think I've still got two years' worth....
I'm burning some chunks and uglies here now. I'm taking the worst first, so my uglies stack is getting prettier all the time! ==c

We'll be out of this season's wood in 2-3 days. I'm not sure I'll be willing to begin poaching next year's stash; seems like a "slippery slope" to me. But being cold does funny things to people...

I say burn now & freeze another day ;)

I have 2 18 gallon bins left. I was out last weekend collecting the last of my uglies. Now we hit another cold snap, 14 last night.

I'm still good. Not to mention some of the stuff I was splitting the other day is ready to burn now. Believe it or not, it's ready.

I'm doing my best to stay ahead. I'm already into next years wood supply but it "is what it is." Got to keep the house warm and the wife happy! I might have to see if I can find some year old wood on Craigslist to supplement my supply for the coming year. Oh my......

It's great when you poke it with the meter (or not) and find it's ready. It's like finding a twenty on the sidewalk. ==c I'm gonna comb the woods before the brush gets thick and grab all the little down, dry stuff I can find. It'll surprise you how fast it can add up. I'm bound and determined to get ahead on my SILs' stacks this year!

Last October I put just shy of 2 1/2 cord in the barn. Saturday the last of that was moved to the porch. So, the next load comes from the outside wood stack but that's okay, we have plenty. As for the total wood burned this year, it probably won't be that much more than last year but the total depends upon if it warms up or not. Typically, in this type of year it will warm up nicely by mid-April and that will probably be the end of the burning season this year. For sure I'm hoping that will be the end of it this year. Time will tell.

Midwestcoast, good luck on that back injury. I do hope this heals for you. I've fought with this thing for almost 30 years now and it has been a tough struggle most of the time. So do yourself a favor and be a bit easy on that back whenever possible.

I'm going to run out in 2 or 3 days. I think I'll run over to the woodstove dealer in the next town over and buy some wood bricks. Never used them and this will be a good opportunity to test them out. I'd rather try them then give it to the Arabs!

You might have called already, but if not, call before you spend the gas on the trip. Most places around here are out of the bricks/blocks/etc.

I have about 1/4 cord of 4.5 cord left to burn that was pegged for this year. Never planned on burning more than 4, but what the heck. Shy of a power outage, whenever this last 1/4 cord is gone, I'm done. Not willing to short myself for next winter. Getting through the next week or two and we should be good. Was down to 10 last night here, think 13 is forcast for tonight, 16 the next, 11 after that, etc..... It's gotta break eventually... Really, it's gotta!

I was thinking the other day, I could probably split my splitting round if it never warms up.

Thanks Dennis, I can assure you I've been as easy on the back as possible and I won't rush it, but I should be back ready for some hard work by the time it hits 95 degrees! <>

Of the wood that I had planned to burn this winter, I'm through most of it, maybe enough to last a couple of weeks yet. At that point I'll be dipping into next year's stash but since I'm 4 years ahead I'm not too worried. If I've measured correctly I could approach 4.5 cords burned at this point. Supposed to be cold the next couple of days and nights and we could even get snow tonight.

My son is out of wood. I've been feeding his stove for a month. I have plenty though. I told him he had to be more like the ant and less like the grasshopper for next year. He had no idea what I meant.:)

Nice to know I'm not the only one.......

the power company will get my money this month.
Me too :(
We will be burning the last of this years wood by Friday. I tried the Eco bricks earlier this year on a whim. I bought some knowing I would run out of wood.
I have those stashed with kindling in case of a power outage between now and the end of heating season. Otherwise, we are done this week (but not by choice).

I'm totally out, using semi seasoned next years wood. I will have to buy at least two cords for next year assuming it's mild. I have several cords cooking for 15-16 so I'm good after the winter of 14-15.

I still don't get the this years and next years wood thing. I just have seasoned and unseasoned, I'll burn til the weather warms and then work on refilling the wood racks that are empty. I understand you have to plan ahead and make sure your wood is seasoned for future years but there's plenty of wood that seasons in one year if need be. Unless there's some type of wood shortage where some of you live.

I was thinking the other day, I could probably split my splitting round if it never warms up.
just did that this past weekend. Also dug out some left over mahogany deck scraps I was saving . still kept the best for stock.
