An addition?? Where's the stove go?

My wife loves kicking around how we could add space, storage, etc... to our house all the time. One such discussion that comes up all the time is turning our garage into a greatroom off the kitchen and adding a detached garage to the back of the yard with a breeze way in between.

None of this is serious...just wishful, whimsical (sp?) thinking out loud. This weekends discussion went something like this.

" So if we turned that into a greatroom, and added some nice windows (south facing ) where would you put a woodstove, and what kind would it be?" Answer.."Well I'd probably put in a big honkin soap stone or VC stove...or maybe a Tulikivi. in the front between the two windows...that would be sooooo sweet." She promptly agreed and kept on talking....

ahhh gotta love her.

Nice!! Want the water warmer? Just load up the logs, turn on the "over the heater flow" and warm pool, steam, fire, "hey where's the beer and the hot chic....er... Yes dear...I'll go get another load of wood"

everything sounds like a good plan till the cost come in. Example the other day In the lumber yard, I'm picking up trim boards,

I look in the back of my truck and it hard to fathom there is $250 worth of exterior trim.

Uh huh The reality of it is I already have wayyy too many projects going. The anti-neighbor fence (The Israili's should be building one this big) the down stairs family room that still needs 2 peices of sheet rock. oooo oooo ooo.... and I still haven't given up on the idea of a stove down there (here?)

The big thing with any home renovation work for me is that unless I simply don't have the equipment to do the work...ie dig a huge hole to replace septic system..I don't have a backhoe like you have elk ) I don't trust contractors to do much, They charge too much when I can do the work myself. I get to learn something. And when it's done, I get the satisfaction of being able to say I did it.

In many cases I find that the jobs aren't ever hard. Sheetrock? easy (just time consuming) Plumbing? Easy.
The fence? easy Flooring? easy.

Lighting? Pain in the a$$ but It's just wires.

I think if I ever did an addition, I'd have someone frame the thing, and I'd finish it. Maybe I'd hire out the sheetrock finish work just to speed things along.

If I only had a spare 50-70 grand laying around.
