It's been in the teens here the past few days, it's abut 21::F now; I've discovered that my little Alderlea insert can't really keep up without some help. If I turn the furnace off, the best I can maintain is about 63.:( Seeing as I have been down with the bug, I thought I would freeze to death the other night.

This is one of the longest cold snaps I have seen in years. My 2300 is working fine and keeping us all comfy. The stove is in the basement and luckily I just finished the ceiling. The ceiling makes a heck of a difference: the heat doesn't get stuck in the floor joists.

Within minutes I can feel the heat rise in the staircase.

Zero two nights in a row. 7 and 10 degree days.
Kitchen Queen 480 is the only heat source. 62* in the farthest bedroom from stove. 1900 sf single level home.
Designed to heat up to 3000 sf with oven door open, I run all night with oven door open, oven "off", not in circulation mode. Mornings I crank it up to cook breakfast, and pull the oven lever to circulate around oven with door open. House gains 5* every two hours. This is the optimum heat output at cruise. Can only take about 4 hours of that, and close air down to 1/2 shutter with oven "off" all day.

That is normal operation of the stock stove. Last summer I added a 3 inch square air inlet below grate for coal capability and automatic temperature control. This keeps the temps much more even with only 5* variation day and night. (The stove loses it's UL listing when modified or burning coal) This thermostat is used on Hitzer hopper fed coal stoves and popular in the Amish community.

single digits here. for the first time this season my furnace has kicked on to heat the upstairs zone. Ive been keeping my fireplacex elite 33 cranking to keep the downstairs in the low 60's (usually around 70 with the blower on low), even getting up in the middle of the night to reload.

On another note, is it possible to overfire the stove in this weather?

It is possible to overfire a stove in any kind of weather. Overfire = stove getting too hot (glowing red, etc). Overfire is not the same as "overusing". Stoves (not sure about your fireplace insert) are made tough for good reason: they are to be used :)

I'm normally just an evening and weekend burner, But the last couple of days I've lit a fire in the morning before going to work and my wife has kept it going all day (she works from home). The little Vista insert can't hold a fire overnight, so I generally don't bother trying, but the last 2 nights I've loaded it up before going to bed. It's just ashes in the morning, but I figure it delays the oil burner coming on during the night.

Been there just "a few" times. Before the border lockdowns we'd go across just for something to do. Go chase the Canadian Wimmens or cause trouble.
LOL. I would go over to IGA and to a ski shop, buy chit and come back. The guy in Van Buren at the ski shop would write up a bogus bill for duty.

There's a nice ski hill in Edmundston for the size of the town. You could have done that before going after those women...slim pickings in that part of the province!

Got up to 42* in Anchorage. Nice bright sun too.
You folks in Alaska get more than you share of chill. I guess you've earned the right to rub it in a bit :). Enjoy the respite from the cold....

-2::F in Bath this morning, the Progress Hybrid is struggling to keep it in the 60's on those overnight burns...

We do get some nice passive solar in a lot of the house during the day so even when it was only 5 or so all day yesterday we were able to get to about 70 inside...
With your update why would I buy the new Progress?

-42::C without the windchill this morning got up to warm balmy -28::C
Good gawd, parts must fall off when you go outside. -42 in "the other Ontario" and +42 in Anchorage. WTF? Crazy week...

I'm not a Woodstock salesman and I don't feel compelled to convince everyone they need to own the same stove as me. I think you should buy whatever stove adequately heats your home for the amount of money you're comfortable spending.

For me the stove is struggling to keep my house in the 60's on these really cold days for many factors, my home is 150 years old, I have no insulation in my walls, I have 9 1/2' food ceilings downstairs, and my rooms are compartmentalized so getting the hot air from room to room isn't always easy.

On days with temperatures even in the teens it can heat my home very well, you get into the 20's and it easily does it, into the 30's and 40's and it's a breeze.

Personally I'll be a loyal Woodstock Soapstone customer because of the companies commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and customer service.

Planning on posting a review of the Kitchen Queen soon. I posted the additional thermostat controlled air intake on this thread since this is the first wood stove we've been comfortable with in these lower temperatures. 4.5 cu. ft. firebox is 20" wide x 18 high x 22 deep. That's a 24" log in a cookstove. We're not pushing the stove at all with 300* outlet temps, 500* oven. (oven themometer goes to 1000 f., only had it to 750) 600* stove top. This is NOT turning the original equiped super charger on. (a non electric additional air inlet to fire box to kick up oven temps) That stove top radiant area is 24 X 48 ! This is a modern cookstove, 900 pounds of 1/4" steel plate built around a stainless steel oven. One of the only stoves designed to exit fire UNDER the oven, burning sideways, instead of across the top, down the side and leave deposits under the oven.
The optional water resevoir sets on the back so it doesn't take up any cooktop space like the Pioneer stove line. (another very good Amish built stove) And it doesn't have to be added when built like many stoves. It has the largest capacity tank of any stove at 24 gallons. With the stainless 3/4" pipe U shape coil in firebox this stove will boil 40 gallons per hour. (yes, enough for radiant or baseboard with storage tank) I didn't need that much hot water, so the coil will be used for domestic water heater tank heating. I added a 1/2" thick aluminum plate for a heat sink to the back of the stove that the reservoir sits on to help transfer heat to the water. Firebox heating coil will boil too much water overnight over humidifying the home. This is built by the Amish for their only heat and hot water source.

EPA exempt for use in ANY state.

My heat sink instead of firebox coil;

The other province of Ontario is Red Lake 600 Miles north of Minneapolis. I am closer to Dallas Texas than Toronto Ontario;lol

Enough talk about cold. Looking at next week's forecast we see mid or high 40's!!! Amazing after what we've gone through and are still going through. One forecast says 50 for Tuesday next week. It has my vote. That warm maybe I'll get the bike out!

Ride over here and help me cut up that walnut lol

It`s been in the -30`s Celcius and colder for most of the week here is south-western Quebec. It`s a balmy -16C or 3F this evening. They are calling for -28c or -18F tonight. I`ve brought the dog in from the cold. Enough wood in the basement for a couple of days. They figure it will warm up to 4C or 39F by Monday. What a year for temperature swings! Need to find a couple of face cords of wood this weekend to help me through February.

Sweet Jebus! WHat part of Ontario do you live in? I am guessing the Northern part but where exactly? THAT is cold.

Welcome to the forums Laurent! Cold swings indeed. It seems things are going to warm up in this part of the province tomorrow (Gaspé). Although 60km/h winds even if it is -12 makes things a bit chilly. But nowheres near -35 with the wind!

T'habite dans quel coin du Québec?

Issued : 4:00 PM MST Friday 25 January 2013
Tonight Clear. Becoming partly cloudy after midnight. Wind becoming northwest 20 km/h after midnight. Low minus 37. Extreme wind chill minus 52.
Saturday A mix of sun and cloud. Wind northwest 20 km/h becoming light in the afternoon. High minus 33. Extreme wind chill minus 52.

Brrrrr!!

Not sure if Lyn still owns the Ski Shop, been about 15 years since I've been in there.
