I need to replace a Fisher Mama Bear in our new construction because the building permit and house insurance guys are just making it too difficult to keep. Currently, I have a 6" pipe out the back of the stove, 29" from finished floor to center of the pipe, want for auxiliary heat of 2000 sqft home...consider it a blank spot with no floor or wall protection. Any suggestions on a wood heater that meets these requirements?

Do you plan on burning nights and weekends? 24/7? Personally, I would be looking at stoves in the range of 3.0 CuFt. if you are looking for 24/7 heat. There are a bunch out there. Any pref on the looks? Stone, cast, plate steel? Burn tubes or cat (or both)? Budget?

For rear-vent stoves the Woodstock Progress and Jotul F600 immediately come to mind. They are both in the size range you will probably need. The Lopi Leyden also can be rear-vented but has a smaller firebox than the other two.

VC Defiant catalytic fits the space, flue and heating load... but brings with it the VC maintenance issues....

There are a lot of fine stoves available today. I chose the Woodstock Progress Hybrid stove for its beauty, respectable burn times, second to none customer service, and confortable heat you get from soapstone. It is probably best to do your own research and come to your own conclusions. If you go with one of the major stove brands that are discussed on this site it is hard to make a mistake.

N. FL makes a difference. You could get away with a 2 cu ft stove unless the goal is to keep indoor temps at 90F. See if there is a Buck dealer in the area.

There aren't many, I can't think of any, rear vent plate steel stoves that resemble the fisher either in simplicy or in durability. The fisher didn't even need door gaskets!
The feature that I'd be looking for is a welded steel firebox and then they can slap on whatever cast iron or stone decorative junk that they want to. The welded firebox is the thing making the seal.

Didn't know that your home is in Florida. You probably don't need a large stove then. Something in the 2 to 2.5 cu ft firebox size should be enough. Look at the next smaller models of the ones we mentioned. A cat stove like the Woodstock may also be a good idea as you will be able to regulate the heat more easily. If you need to have it shipped anyway Woodstock may be a really good option; They have a 6-month, no questions asked return policy.

Didn't mention it earlier due to your size requirements, but if a smaller stove would work then look at the Napoleon 1600 or Hudson River stoves.

I also forgot to mention the Lopi Cape Cod.
Both the Buck 261 and the Jotul F45/50/55 series are welded steel stoves with rear exit. Technically so are the Quadrafire Yosemite and Cumberland Gap. The difference between the Buck and the Jotuls or Quads is the later have a cast iron jacket.

Thanks for posting that info cs. I didn't know they had a rear-exit option. At 23" it's nice and low too.
edit: just downloaded the manual. Boy is that terse, and incomplete. They say nothing about the hearth requirements other than an obscure mention of an approved floor protector. Is this stove ember protection only? K.=84?

I would call Woodstock and talked to those great folks.. What other stove company will allow you to use their stove for basically a whole heating season and then return it for a full refund or exchange for another model no questions asked.. I actually did it! Upgraded to their larger Progress Hybrid from a Fireview.. No questions asked... To me this is a very safe and comfortable way to see if the stove you chose is right for your situation.. Plus your not stuck taking a loss on selling a new stove you just bought.. I think having the cook top on the hybrid is a win-win situation.. lay the stones back down and you back to a regular stove again, cook top is hidden.. Any time you call Woodstock, your talking with someone with in 30 seconds, not once and a while, every time! They have created some very satisfied customers on here, so speaking highly of them is a pleasure! They'll treat you like family. Call and you'll see . Plus dealing direct is great!

What other stove company will allow you to use their stove for basically a whole heating season and then return it for a full refund or exchange for another model no questions asked.. I actually did it! Upgraded to their larger Progress Hybrid from a Fireview.. No questions asked... To me this is a very safe and comfortable way to see if the stove you chose is right for your situation.. Plus your not stuck taking a loss on selling a new stove you just bought..
