Feeling the Heat

Marblehead , Ma
recently i've seen it mentioned that fsu's are softies . ok well i just went out to my shed and opened a bag (please remind me to tape it back up ) from this year . i'm assuming this because my local hd ran out back in sept and all they had were hearthsides . then restocked .

these look and feel like hardwood , don't look or smell like softwoods and the only thing on the bag that says anything is that they are made from wood .

i remember reading a rumor that energex was going to be releasing a softy , then all of a sudden people start claiming that they've found the holy grail of box store pellets . they burn ok in my stove but nothing to right home about .

so how did fsu's all of a sudden become softwood ?

Pretty sure they're a blend.

Member Pellet-King insists that this years run of FSU is a softie. I said in another thread that I don't think this is accurate but I can't dispute it myself since the ones I have are from last year and haven't been able to locate any here on the North Shore of Mass.

see that's the problem . someone says something and from then on it's taken as gospel .

not trying to incite a riot , but still nothing about these pellets says softwood .

Word of mouth. I guess it would be word of keyboard. I remember reading there was a strong percentage of softwood in them, but still less than half.

lol ok . yea waaaay less than half if any . sorry but when i look at them and hold a handfull all i see and feel is hardwood .

rumors , nothing more nothing less .

The bags say "Made inCanada" and we know they are Energex so we "ass-u- me" they are the Energex 60 soft 40 hard blend pellet.

Mine are a July bag date and have a definite softwood smell and super fine softwoodesque ash.

Of course who knows what kind of bagging shenanigans could be going on in the pellet manufacturing world!!

Look and taste like softwood to me :), along with Chow's my vote for sleeper of the year!!
I wont need to buy any hotter pellet this year's winter....luvum!

ass-u-me anything you want . the ones i've gotten smell nothing like any softwood . where do you get that they're 60-40 whatever ? mine look and feel and smell like hardwood .

Energex canadian are a blend.....the FSU are made by the same company...no idea if the FSU are a blend or not.

Doesn't really matter what they are...they either burn well or they don't.

I personally like them a lot

Last time I burned a bag of em was 2005 and they burned verrrry nice. Minimal ash. Does that mean they're softwood?..nope. They were very light in color though. Probably the lightest colored pellets I've burned. Does this add anything to the discussion?...nope :)

Woody, don't forget to tape that bag back up.

I like the FSUs better than anything else I tried so far, whatever they are. Admittedly, there are still 3-4 brands I hadn't opened yet, but I loaded 3 tons of the FSUs into the house over the weekend.

Perfectly stated. Hell, I know this is a pellet forum, but some people simply have too much time on their hands. Buy the pellets, throw them into your stove, and enjoy the heat! I've never come across so many "science experiments" on a message board! I didn't even know that I was supposed to care whether the pellets I bought were hard or soft wood

and where does this equate to fsu's are softwood ?
How do get that from my post?? I've never believed FSU are 100% softwood. Before I even joined hearth I was told by a HD manager that they were 60/40. I still believe they are the blend.

Would not surprise me if they are putting Chow in the FSU bags.
