I need some. My old man is finally giving up on his Jotul 550.

The bigger the better. The old man wants a cat stove but I'm pushing against that as it is my belief that he isn't careful enough and will motor through the cats. Budget not an issue.
 
Sounds like he needs a Summit? Safe to assume he has a 6" liner already?

What's he gonna do to the cat?

I had him sold on the Summit until he went to the dealer and saw that the 550 takes 24" splits and most of the wood he has is cut 20"+. If he gets a Summit he'll spend next winter trimming splits on his chop saw. I'm making a push for the Summit regardless, however I am open to any ideas.
 
Help him trim the splits? Not many sane choices out there that are gonna eat 24" wood. When I retired the old stove I had six cords of 24" stacked for it. Spent the whole winter lopping ends off of the next days loads.

Or ride it out next winter with the 550. Which if he as dry wood I don't know why it ain't getting it done for him. The thing is a hoss.

It really isn't a hoss. It has a shallow firebox that doesn't really fit all that much wood. His house is old and big and full of windows.

I'm the one that cuts, splits, and hauls his wood so I'll be g0dd@mmed if I sit there and lop off the ends for him after he insists that his wood be cut to 20+ inches. Most of it is between 19"-22".

Is the problem getting heat w/ the 550 or burn time? I get good heat and it's a tank but I can't argue that the 550 is an easy heater to get long/overnight burns out of. The firebox is tough to pack full going E/W only. If you are going to end up cutting down wood anyway might try cutting some in 1/2 now and try N/S loading to get more wood in the box. When I do have some splits to go N/S I can get longer longer burns.

Or just get a new toy.

We've dialed it in over the last 3 years and it works fine, it's just not enough stove. It's billed as a large insert but compared to other large inserts it's not really that large. I think I can get more wood in my "medium" sized Spectrum Classic.

Not sure if it is much of an improvement over the 550, though. If you would not have ruled out catalytic I would have suggested the Kuma Sequoia. Would it be an option to put a freestander on the hearth? A big, non-catalytic stove could be easier to find than an insert.

Without seeing it up close I can't say for sure but that stove looks wide and shallow (just like the 550). I haven't got him to rule out cats. He's very interested in the big Kuma.

Gotcha. No way around it, it's a flush faced insert so there is a limit there. Good luck, be interested in what you end up with.

I was looking for BIG inserts. Here is my short list:

Osburn 2400 (good size firebox, not catalytic, lots of very satisfied users on hearth.com, firebox will take 21")
Kuma Sequoia (take 8" liner)
Buck 91 (takes 8" liner)
Buck 94NC (takes 8" liner)
Blaze king KING (takes 8" liner)
Regency I3100 (although I have read too many bad things about their customer service)
Quadrafire 5100i (puts out a lot of heat for it's size, pretty advanced combustion controls, not catalytic)
Hearthstone Clydesdale (pricier, but hearthstone doesn't make junk either)

These two are no name inserts that I stumbled across in my search:

I have ultimately decided to go with a free standing stove, but hopefully this helps you.

I started with a list of about 60, and these are the only ones I was still considering.
 
Any possibility you could fit a Hearthstone Manchester in there with a rear-vent? It looks like it would fit all your requirements and may heat better anyway than an insert.

+1 to that.

If you are considering free standing stoves, you might also consider a woodstock Progress Hybrid (rear vent, short legs).....it will fit into a 29" tall space.

The big Bucks require 8" liners.
 
Country has a big new Grandview insert that is worth looking at. I'll get a picture up as son as I can.

Touche.........I got to listing all the big inserts and that one slipped in.........I got to thinking about the BUCK 91, and that brought my brain to the KING.

But it's still a good stove;)

The Kuma is on the checkout list. I hadn't heard about the Osburn, so thanks. The biggest BK insert is the Princess and it is not big enough. We went to the Regency dealer today but they did not have a 3100 in stock - dealer claims he rarely sells them (which made me wonder. Have to look at the Quad. Saw a Clydesdale today - only EW loading so it got scratched.

It's a huge hole nothing won't fit. Do the Manfield and Clydesdale have a similar firebox?

We looked at a Country Canyon C310. My dad liked it a lot because it stuck out 9". Is it similar? I can't find the insert version on their website.
 
Since you are considering the Summit, what about the Lopi Freedom? It sticks out about 8" or so, and fits 24" logs. And it's built right there in WA.
 
The Manny is bigger. 3.2 cf vs. 2,4 for the Clyde. And will hold a 21" stick. N/S.

Would love to have me a Mansfield. But the heavy sucker would probably drop my hearth into the basement.

If you require EW and NS loading, that will scratch a lot of those inserts........I know the Osburn 2400 is EW only (unless you cut your wood real short), and I think the Quadrafire is too. Most inserts are EW only. There are some exceptions, but more than 60% are for sure EW only.

It's new, built to the hilt. Not sure if it is on their website yet. It has a heat exchanger extraction system that looks quite aggressive. The Country line is now under IHP. This is the only info I found online about the new Montlake insert.
