We went out to dinner last evening, with another couple and after dinner, the wives decide they wanted to go to K-mart, and while we were there, both my friend and I decided we would just sit in the car and wait for them to shop.

Half way home, my wife said oh by the way, K-mart had pellets for the insert, of course she had no idea of the brand name of the pellets but did remember the price at 5.25 per bag. So tonight I think I will make a trip over and see what brand they are and if they are a different brand than I have tried before, I'll pick up a couple of bags to see how they burn. I think my wife might become the pellet pig instead of me. LOL

I'm sure a doctor or veterinarian could tell a story or two

It was a one in a million shot Doc, one in a million.............

I'll bet K mart is sold out before you manage to get back there.

Home depot in waterbury ct had pellets for 1/2 day. They got 22 tons in at 10 am and sold the last ton at 6 pm. & no one even knew that home depot was expecting a shipment of pellets.
It was a 1 month delayed shipment that should have come in 3 weeks earlier.

I think that there is some serious pellet hoarding going on.
I bought 1 ton for $5.99 bag & that is hard to fit it all into a honda civic.
in fact, I spent the whole day, unloading the car, 1 bag at a time & then I had to go back to home depot to get the other 25 bags, in a second trip.

Last winter, I saw pellets at shop rite supermarket & k mart, but I didn't buy any , as I was already set for the winter.

www.tractorsupply.com sells pellets too, as does agway &arechbon;hardware, but those stores are too far to travel for me.

I wonder if sears would have pellets. I doubt it.

I think your right. There is no need to stock more a than a one years supply at a time. I am not refering to tonnage quotas , just what you consume in a season wheter it be 3 tons or 8 tons and so on....

Just go out anywhere in new england and I dare you to try to find pellets in stock, ready to buy
for under $6.50 a bag. My bet is that you can't & won't find them. I no longer care too much since I already have my one ton for the year. but there are people out there with no pellets & a cold stove. So if you have 18 tons stashed away, good for you, at least you & I won't be cold this winter. Actually, I think that the pellet manifacturers really dropped the ball this year & took it easy during the summer ,when they should have been running 3 shifts, continious.

But ,I bet there was a sawdust shortage also, from many saw mills going out of business when the new housing starts market fell down the toilet & got flushed, but good.

Add to this the highest cost of desial fuel ever, both for getting the saw dust to the pellet mills & getting the pellets distributed to us.

Now that the desial fuel has come down $1.oo a gallon, we may begin to see shipments trickling in but when home depot gets a 22 ton truck load & sells out in under 8 hours, there is some serious hoarding going on.

I have a feeling that pellet resellers bought out most of the pellets for their stores, so that they could sell home depot $6.oo a bag pellets for $7.50 a bag & only to people that bought their stoves from them.

So this is a bad situation, no matter how you slice it, dice it,or repackage it while raising higher the price per bag.

This is not a free market , but a man made shortage far worst than what was originally intended by the market manipulators, whomever they may be.

When customers from hearth.com are calling the Ct. attourney general, richard bluimthal, and he acts on the situation, you know things are out of hand & worst than bad.

I have a better sense of humor than most but I am neither a heartless bastard nor a bleeding heart. I am ,if anything , a conserative.

But it chaffs my butt, hard, to be out on the road in a rented truck, trying to find pellets to buy
and even willing to pay too much for them , wasting gasoline & time & still not being able to buy pellets. Can't use the phone to save the trip either, because pellet sellors such as home depot & lowes & wal mart won't answer their phones at all.

If that is not enough to make a person steamed, I don't know what is.

Superior stove asked me " Did you buy your stove from us " & I replied that I had not. So they said "then we have no pellets to sell you. I replied that I was going to take me & my money elsewheres, where they know how to treat a customer properly & that i wouldn't be buying a second pellet stove today, after all.

Then did their face drop. It was a joy to behold. Did I think that they had it comming?? Oh yes & then some. I felt like telling them that it would be a cold day in hell before I ever bought a stove from them.

And now, the price of fuel oil is down to 2.38 a gal and actually competitive with pellets at 300.oo per ton. I might actually buy 200 gal of fuel oil, just as a safety net or to splurge for a day & warm up the whole 8 room house, instead of only 4 rooms.

So, everyone has a piece of the blame in this mess but that does not get it straightened out.

The pellet manufacturers must get the most blame for not planning for addiquate supply but people willing to buy as much as they can store at any price only makes things all the worst.

But, I can understand the "I'd better buy as much as I can now before the price goes up , yet again mindset.

And actually,it is only good business sense.

If the mfg don't eventually make an addiquate supply, then someone, maybe our darling, huisain obalma, should ration the distribution, as a temporary measure while fineing the mfg for intensionally creating a man made shortage in order to pressure the price higher.

Pellet manufacturing has been playing catch up ball since 2000, for 8 years going on 9 years, so how much longer must we wait for them to finally get it right???? How much excuses is too much excuses.

They should plan to overproduce and they most likely will find out that their susposed overproduction is not enough to fill market demmand.

NOT in my garage.Between NEWP and Agway in Hillsboro NH (the dealer NEWP sent me to) all I get is stories !Paid in full first week in June 4 tons (11 ton total order with my neighbors all paid in full !!)
Not happy

I live 20 minutes from the Corinth pellet mill in central Maine. They installed an extra machine this summer and have been running 3 shifts.
I got mine at my heating oil dealer for 265 per ton. Lots of oil dealers around here are jumping on the pellet bandwagon. I feel for those living
south of here, because pellets can be had within a few days or a week or so if you are flexible and make some calls.

I love how they say on the bag "not intended for human or animal consumption"
I know a vet, and I have seen the wide variety of things dogs will eat.. towels, underwear, gorilla glue.
Cloth products can shred and bind in the intestines.. bad bad news.

Anyway.. this little mom & pop country convenience store near here started selling barefoot pellets for $7 bag/$265 ton.
I suspect when they get enough orders, they order a trailer load. It seems like everyone is getting into the act.

eernest4- don't be shy, tell us how you really feel... ;-)

I have found a pellet in my bed. Must have stuck to a kid foot or dog foot from the basement. LOL

That's hilarious I found one in my bed too! Must have
stuck to me though because I don't have kids and
kicked the dog out of my bed a year ago.

Must live close to my area, unless you are on the Bangor side of Corinth. I live 20 minutes away in Dexter. I was able to get my pellets (2 weeks ago) out of Dedham at Granville Stone, but only because I also bought the stove there. Before I got those, I was getting them all over the place. It was kind of interesting though, because I bought several bags at the hardware store in Corinth, but they were lignetics - not Corinth pellets. Less than a mile down the road!!

Anyway... I feel good with my four tons in the garage.... probably have to pick up another ton or so... but we are WARM and loving it.

I can name a number of places in my area that have them.

Spaulding Fence in Worcester: has Northern Lights and New England Wood Pellets both at $6/bag.

Higgins Energy Alternatives In Barre:

Eureka {western soft mixture}

($349 a ton = 50 bags)

Westwood {western soft mixture}
at 65 bags a skid - $454.35
($349 a ton = 50 bags)

Michigan {hardwood}
at 70 bags a skid - $419.30
($299 a ton = 50 bags)

I know RW Bentley Fuel in Barre has some in stock too, don't know the price.

I take offence at this way of thinking. I understand the frustration levels due to the fact We get too many phone calls a day asking for pellets. I assure you that most manufactures are working as many hours as possible. This problem has been building since last spring and guys like me are doing everything possible to solve the problems for our customers. There are several reasons there are few pellets to be found but it is unfair to blame the pellets makers or the real pellet dealers. The economy has slowed causing the housing market to fall and therefore the lumber prices to drop. If the main source of sawdust(lumber mills) dries up then there is less raw material to make the pellets out of. The bigger reason is the fact that the oil companies have been raping the general public all year and there has been unprecidented numbers of new stove sales this year(remember the wait times on your new products.) Each new unit will require between 3 to 5 tons for the average year. The pellet mills just can not produce fast enough. We have been trying to supply our current customers and many new customers that just can't get fuel from their regular suppliers. The cost for pellets has risen mostly due the the distance the pellets muct travel. The pellets mills are basicly sold out and the only area that can take on new orders are from the west coast. Every mile they pellets move adds cost. Just beacuse the price goes up don't assume the dealers are getting rich off of it. The mark-up on a ton of pellets can easily be totally lost on just a few bags that get damaged in shipping. We make approximately the same amount of gross profit on a ton of pellets now as we did 5 years ago. I just wish the general public wouldn't jump to the conclusion the pellet guys are out to get them just like the oil guys are. As for the goverment getting their sticky fingers inolved....if you think there are shortages and costs issues now just add another layer of burecratic thinking into the mix and you may as well take that stove you bought to save your hard earned cash and toss it in the lake. The only thing the government can do is make things way worse.

Last winter, Shaws Grocery market in Randolph & Taunton MA had a few pallets of Fireside
pellets sitting in their stores near the registers.

EDIT: Shaws had them again earlier this fall, but they no longer have any, for obvious reasons

The pellets here at K-mart are Pennington brand, and I think I read on here they were not that great so I only purchased two bags. I will try and let you guys know what I think.
