Will this work for a mantle shield? Need help!

Hello There,
If you look at the picture, there is an angled piece as part of the Hearthstone surround--can I put a 24 AWG piece of metal there, where the birthday card (obviously it would be the width of the stove and deep enough to come under the mantle) is instead of mounting one under my mantle? Any other ideas? The mantle is only 5" deep.

IMHO, you have a choice if THREE locations to install your shield...
One is where you have the card, but I would attach it to the underside of the surround
to keep the heat diverted outwards...
One is directly attached to 1" spacers
on the underside of the mantel trim, adjacent to the brick...
One is to tuck it down behind the top of the surround between the
surround & the brick...
Any of the three will divert the heat away from your mantel shelf,
but I'd opt for the last one, as you'd be able to slide it out & stash
it somewhere during the non-burn season...
 
I would pick the third option as well - you won't be obscuring your stove top by having the shield higher up.

I like that idea as well, and all I would have to do is tuck it in. As for the length, I only need to come out as far as the mantle above it, right?

I have a similar setup on my Jotul. I used 2 large cup magnets to attach the heatshield to the surround that way you don't have to drill into you surround. Works awesome!

The deflector you first described would be most effective becuase it will be closest to the radiant and convection source and will reflect more heat outward. But all 3 options would work fine. The mantel shield should extend at least 1" past the mantel depth.
 
Should the shield come out as far as the sight line between the front edge of the mantle and the front edge of the stove? The closer the shield is to the stove, the more the mantle could be exposed to that direct line from the front surface of the stove top.

Bump. Good question. I'm going to have to mount a shield as well.
