I am heading to bed with a grin on my face and a front yard full of wood. I just had to tell someone. Last night I saw a listing on craigslist for some firewood for free. It said "seasoned" and "hardwood". Which to me on craigslist means "cut yesterday" and "poplar". Ha
So I email the guy and he actually calls me back. It gets better. He lives a whole 5 blocks from me! It gets better. I show up in my civic for the scrounge and see the pile in the front yard and it looks good. It gets better. He says "you must haul and load the junk wood first, then I let you load the good stuff" His idea of junk wood was cherry! It gets better. I must take the pallets too. Now, I like pallets and burn plenty of them. These were the biggest heaviest duty pallets I have ever seen. Picture 2x6s of oak with 4x10s of oak runners. they were 4x8 pallets. I have never seen anything like them. I cant wait to burn them. Then he says "you need a truck". I agreed and stated I would come back with a tacoma. He said "You need a bigger truck or lots of loads" and takes me back to his prize. If I haul his "junk" (cherry rounds seasoned for many years under cover and the prementioned pallets) I can have this pile.
It was at least a cord and a half of the most beautiful oak I have ever seen. It was dry, split, stacked and under a wood shed for as long as he has owned the house for four years. I head to the local pensky dealer for a big truck and rent a 14 ft rig and go back.
I filled the rig (nearly) and returned home to fill my yard with a smile on my face. I bet it was about 3 cords total. FOR FREE!! Wait, it gets better.
I am heading back to drop off the big rig. only having it for a total rental of 1.5 miles and I see a tree service cutting up a big cherry tree. I pull over and ask if they need the wood. They say i can have it and next thing I know, a half dozen mexicans are filling my truck. They finish clearing the yard and say, "do you want the wood in our rig? Its Apple and Pear." I say "sure" The do their thing and empty their truck into mine. I go home and pile the yard deeper. Then I return the truck. I am honest with the rental company and tell them I did not put any gas in the rig because I hardly drove it and only had it for a few hours. They thought that was fine and then cut me a deal on the rental. It cost a total of $22.00.
The only bad thing I can come up with is that the oak splits are 18 inches and are too big to fit in my stove. I dont care. I will cut them shorter with a grin. Wow. I have never had such a good thing land in my lap. I dont deserve this.
