I went to load up my stove this morning, placed a bunch of the smaller pieces in, made a nice stack in there, like I've done every morning for the past months, usually the wood just lights right off and indeed it started to flame up as I was finishing placing spilts on it, I closed up the doors and went to get my coffee, since it's fairly warm out this morning, I went out onto the deck to enjoy the sunrise through the trees, the quietness (still morning) many inches of snow on the ground, birds, squirrels...etc.

WHile I'm out there, I see the stack just billowing smoke, I just thought, oh, well I just put that wood in, probably still getting up to temp, 10-15 minutes pass, and it's still smoking alot, I go inside., and there's nary a flame, just a small flicker here and there, and I'm thinking to myself, WTF, that should light right off. The inside of the stove is just filled with smoke, yo ucan hardly see the wood a few inches from the glass, I open the doors and flames instantly fill the whole firebox, I let it go for 30 seconds or so, and close up the doors, flames go out, smoke....I'm like WTF...
Then I start to think, what could cause this, hmm...did I somehow get some wet wood or something, I didn't think so, it's the same wood I've been using all winter, split fall of '08 and was mostly standing deadwood to begin with, I pull out the moisture meter and start checking some pieces on the pile I just filled the stove from...nope...nothing over 22%, I start getting frustrated, the things been smoking now for over 20 minutes, I'm thinking, then it hits me, duh....the air, I never opened up the air, I open it up and everything lights up and she's off.

Just goes to show, complacency is not a good virtue for a wood burner. How many times have I loaded that stove and not opened up the air, never until now, so why now and why didn't it dawn on me immediately what the issue was. Just makes you feel stuppiiiddd..

Dude, lack of coffee in the morning has been known to cause all sorts of anomalies.
It took me almost 1/2 an hour this morning to get all the dogs out and back in the house, start the fire, take a whiz,...yadayada.
THEEENNN, I got my coffee. WTH was I thinking? Should have gotten the coffee first, since I also had the air way down from the fire last night.
Got the fire going, closed the door thinking, "wow, that's going good", flue temp way up and all. Got my coffee, sat down and got on here. Looked at the fire, and it was almost out. WHAT?! Got up, went to take a closer look, and hmm what do 'ya know. Air closed. DUH! Opened it up, and within about 30 seconds, it was going again. Right now, flue's at 400, and the stove's cruising at 700. House was 62 when I got up an hour ago, now it's 66.
Have another cup, and get on with the day. That's what I'm going to go do right now.

I don't even want to think about how many times I have done the same thing.

Being stupid is not admitting having done something like you describe. Cudo's to you on a good post as well as taking the time in the early morning to reflect on what nature has to offer. NOt doing that is what is really stupid in my book.

I hate to admit it...but it happens to me pretty regularly (15 min ago...) as well. I work nights so i reload the stove when I get home...so I am going to call my "specialness" work related :)

Well, that turned out well for you. lol

You've got a lot of company on this one 73. And some of us can't blame lack of coffee.

At least its not the other way around :bug:

No, that's my specialty. Can't tell you how many times this year I spaced out with a box full of kindling and small splits and the air open all the way. What gets my attention every time?

The sound of the flue pipe thermometer sliding down as it loses its magnetism. :red:

Happens to me about once a week. The 50's for me have sucked and don't want to think about 60's.

Happens here once in a while. I don't drink coffee, so I have an excuse. Takes a lil longer to get the gears upstairs churning.

Also, once you stop to think, don't forget to restart again.

Yup . . . had that happen to me twice. Once last burning season . . . and apparently since I didn't learn my lesson had it happen last Fall for a second time . . . hopefully I will not repeat that mistake this coming Fall.
