MWP... Are they worth $219 per ton?

I know everyone has said they have "changed" their manufacturing process.
If they are better than they were, and the ash isn't to bad, i might buy a ton and take a chance.
I would really like to support a local company.

Has anyone burned some of the new batches?

Strange, you know what we all recommend.....buy a few bags to try first. I know it's not the right time of year for that, but you do NOT want to get stuck with a whole ton of something that you know NOTHING about, that burns terrible in your stove w/ no heat....then that "great deal at $219" won't seem so great. Spend a little more for a better pellet that is a known quantity, IMO.

What other pellets do you have available in your area?

I can get NEWP, MWP, Maine's choice LG's some Okies, Cleanfire, Michigan, Corinth, and whatever TSC, HD, and Lowes will carry this year.

Im not sure that you can tell much from a bag or two, especially in July. I think for that price, I will buy a ton, and still buy my usual amount
for the season. If they suck, i'll either mix in or use it for kitty litter!

Out of that bunch, I'd stick with either the LG's or the Okies, or a combo of both, IMO.

I was going to try some of the new batch before turning the stove off for the season but other events overtook me and I never got to it and the stove is unplugged and awaiting some gasket material.

I'd definitely try a couple of bags before buying a ton or more. Two bags should give you a good hint about ash levels. Other than that I agree that now isn't exactly the best time to be trying pellets in a stove.

I asked them if they had any testing results for their pellets. The nice lady at the plant promptly send me a copy of a fresh report from from Twin Port testing. The results look pretty good to me. As far as price the guy in Jay is still advertising's at $199 a ton.

For some reason the site won't let me upload the pdf file to this post, the BTU was 8125 and ash .54 % for their latest batch. If someone can help me post it I will put up the whole report.

Likely the PDF is too large, there is a size limit on attachments and as a lot of folks have discovered graphics and other files tend to be large, or it could be that the site isn't set up to allow them for any number of reasons.

That 0.54% ash is a lot better than the 0.89% of the last batch I burned in 2009 and a hell of a lot better than what appeared to be marginal standard grade at approximately 3% of the first batch I burned in 2008.

.89? I had them 2 years ago and it was like 35% ash :)

burned 6 tons of last years MWP, 35% ash seems about right, got 3 tons of MWP with the new bag, and three tons of NEWP, according to some on this site, the new MWP is better than NEWP, some people seem to have burned some before the season ended.

Maine Woods are selling for $219.00 a ton in my area, I just picked up LG's for $245.00 a ton. For $26.00 extra you are buying a way superior pellet then Maine Woods. Just my two cents.

Yes .89% it was a 2009 batch, two years ago was 2008, MWP has (like a number of (but not all) startups) discovered a lousy product doesn't go over well and have made a number of changes for the better.

I'd say from the figures floating around that their latest batches are better than or equal to most of what is available in a number of markets. But like most figures from testing labs I'd trust my own test burn before committing to a large purchase.

You do understand (at least I hope you do) that there can always be old product still out there, this past spring (2010) on one of my walks through the local Wal-Mart there were wrapped pallets of Natures Heat with a 2007 date on it. So much for the great pellet shortage of 2008 etc..., etc ....

MWP latest batch has a whole new bag, it just says "premium wood pellets" on it and has a picture of a pellet stove, in fact it doesn't say maine woods pellets anywhere on it.

Boy, talk about trying to sell your pellets by going "under the radar" with an unmarked bag. I guess they figured that too many people wouldn't buy them again if they saw the real name.

Well at least we can tell the new from the old batches. I can get them for $199/ton. My plan is to at least try some come fall. Sounds like they are much better than the shoulder pellets of old! It's been a while since I bought decent pellets for under 2 bills/ton! One can only hope????

I plan on getting a couple tons of these, and a couple of the Maine Choice. Makes me mad that I'm 50 miles from the Athens mill, and jtakeman can buy them cheaper than I can. Something ain't right about this.

I guess thats what is called regional pricing??? I can get some pellet brands cheaper here that roll from or thru Maine. Doesnt make much sense to me either!

I can get Maine Choice for $239/ton. What are they near you??

Does anybody like Infernos out of Rhode Island ?

I have only heard of one member saying they were OK. The majority think they stink! Including me. Extremely low heat and Very high ash from my burn sample.

I wouldn't buy a lot unless you burn some first! Personally I think you should stay away and buy something else.

But you should check out the price of traction sand...
These pellets work best on icy driveways.

x10!

Why not spend a bit more and buy a pellet which is KNOWN to be good, such as Okies? Doesnt make alot of sense to me to buy garbage for one price, where you can spend $80-$100 more for the season and buy something that IS top of the line. Just my 2 cents!
