I have a 30x40 open ceiling metal shed in NW Wisconsin that is currently uninsulated. I plan to wire and insulate over the next few years. Will the 30 NC be to much stove for this floor space? This will be my first stove purchase. F&F will have the 30 NC on sale on Monday for $799 and based on what I have read on this site I would like to purchase one if it will work with this Sq. footage.

Thanks for the help!

Your going to want alot of stove. If it's anything like my barns they're pretty hard to heat since they're nowhere NEAR as tight as even a loose house. Plus since it's not heated all the time it takes a whole lot to warm up the building from arctic temps, esspecially since the lower 8ft of my barn is all cinderblock.

Most people don't recommend putting stoves in a garage which can contain volatile fluids. This is actually code in many places.

Even if you don't intend to store gas, cleaning solvents, a car etc in this space, who knows what the future holds. Those that do install in a garage can reduce the risk by having the stove elevated above the floor. 18 inches stands out in my mind.

If it were me, I'd build the stove up to at least that height just in case. Plus it's easier on the back to load wood into a stove that's higher off the ground.

I heat my home with a 30, it's a good stove.

Good luck and please come back to let us know how you have made out.

Pen, Thanks for the recommendation. The shed is the only building we currently have on this property and there are ATVs and such store within it. I'll make sure to build the hearth high enought to get the fire box to at least 18". It will be a while before I get a chance to install the stove, right now the only way I can get back to it is via snow shoes.

Thank you!

It'll be hard to put something too big in there. It takes a lot of heat to raise a place tens of degrees quickly. You might consider a small wood furnace to do the job faster. The 30NC should do it, with a blower, but it could take a while unless you can keep the place heated 24/7. Otherwise, bringing it up from 20 to 60 is going to take some brute force.

I'm guessing this shed will be brought up to temp from freezing cold and not heated 24/7. Sizing a stove for 24/7 heating versus part-time heating is very different. If I had to bring my house up to temp from very cold, it would take days, yet on mild days, the stove makes it too hot.
