I installed a ss liner to replace clay tile. It was difficult to get the pipe in as the clearance was tight. I had 1/2" wrap insulation on the liner but want to also use loose vermiculite around the liner. Anyone ever done this and is there a problem with this? Can I be too insulated?

I can't address your issue directly, but I do know that vermiculite loses its insulating properties when wet, so you'll need a good moisture seal at the top.

Quite a few threads on this - search "perlite".

Be aware, that mode of mixed insulation is probably not an approved application for your liner specs. But I'm sure it would work fine.

If you have an insulation wrap on that pipe, I'd leave it there. Most SS liner companies do not advocate the use of loose vermiculite or perlite around their liners (most I've spoken to say this is because their testing never included its use).

Actually I would leave the wrap in place. Just add the vermiculite for extra fire protection.

I think that's what he's saying. Leave the insulation around the liner and add the vermiculite to it. I'm no expert but it seems to me the more insulation the better. I'm getting ready to do Perlite in mine instead of vermiculite because of the aforementioned water issues with vermiculite. Not that I expect to have any water get in but you never know.

The chimney is inside the house except for the portion above the roof so I wasn't too worried about moisture. I am installing a new cap that should make it water tight for some time.

The 1/2" wrap of insulation just seemed wimpy to me.
