I have a heat detector in my garage. Smoke alarm was going off much too often... welding, torch cutting, shoot even just smoking a cigar. It cost around $40, but it's one that tied into my home alarm so I'd imagine one that just beeps would be cheaper.
 
It's also good if they are "latching" so it blinks to let you know which one caused them to go off (in an interconnected system).
