Smear a thin coating of Hi-Temp silicone on the outside of the stove pipe, slide the appliance adapter on all the way. Then use 3 sheet metal screws drilled equally around the outside through the adapter into the stove pipe. Screws only need to be like 1/4" long.....maybe #8.

I also put a bead around the edge where the adapter met the pipe.....just to be sure.

I used a hose clamp on mine, at it works good for me. It may not be the best method, but it is easy to remove when needed, only need to turn one screw. It's probably not as solid as screwing it down, but I haven't had a problem with it at all.
If it's that easy to remove, then are you saying you didn't use any silicone on the adapter? If not, I hope you have a good CO detector near the stove. The one time you put that back together, and there's a leak, you'll want to know about it.
