We have an old majestic woodburning fireplace model m36f766772, can we convert it to a gas log fireplace?

Sure, just make sure the fireplace and flue are cleaned first. You could also install a gas insert, more pricey, but would be efficient and would look real nice. Kingsman makes a real nice unit. http://www.kingsmanind.com/fivented

You can probably do it, but make sure it's UL approved to burn gas.
As Webby said you may also be able to put an insert in inside the fire
box, but they tend to be quite small, don't throw a lot of heat & aren't
really that nice to look at. If you have the money, & are dead set on
burning gas for the convenience, have it torn COMPLETELY out & have
it replaced with a Gas-Burning FIREPLACE. You should be able to get a
unit that is nearly identical in size that will also give you heat during a
power failure. Keep in mind that this is about an 8 hour project & it IS
costly, but a qualified, responsible Hearth Shop will do the job so well,
that you shouldn't even be able to tell that they were in your home...
