If I could have only one saw it would be a Stihl MS260 with a muffler mod.
Sell the (heavy and underpowered) 290 for a couple hundred bucks, by the 260, port the muffler, pull the limiters and never look back. It'll work for 98% of the chainsaw work you'll need to do.
 
$450 is no man's land for saws, not enough to buy more saw than the 290 you had, but plenty if you wanted another MS290 or a 455 Rancher.

Personally, I'd open up to about $500 and look at a MS311 if you want another Stihl or the Husky 346XP if you are looking for the Porsche of saws.
