Changing Splitter motor

    View attachment 78121 View attachment 78121 B&S 10hp blew this morning. Never changed a splitter motor before. I know I need to match HP, shaft diameter. I would imagine key size, shaft length are also vital. What else?

    How is the engine connected to the pump? Lovejoy or a chain and spocket?

    Mounting bolt holes are nice to have the same too.
    Nice if you have the ID tag off the old engine. Helps get a perfect match.

    Actually you'd be surprised how many things interchange quite easily. Mounting hole patterns (cue Beavis & Butthead....) should be the same on similar sized engines. HP doesn't have to match but if it's close it should work fine. Shaft diameter is easily adapted via the Lovejoy connection but length should be the same as the engine you're replacing unless you use spacers or modify the pump mounting frame. Any ideas for a replacement, those OHV Briggs motors are pretty common or maybe a Chinese Honda clone?

    If you're in a real DIY mood you could always short-block the Briggs, not hard to do. I would expect it to be a half-day project for an average DIY'er.

    The Harbor Freight Predator engine has been a hit for splitter builds lately, hopefully you have a Harbor Freight store nearby you can pick one up at. As always the Honda engines are top rated.

    Might be time to up the pump size at the same time as the engine? Not sure what you have currently for GPM.

    Update- It originally had a 10 HP B&S Intek, I am looking at a gx340 honda 11hp. Is this too many horses?

    No such thing. ;) 9Hp Honda GX270 would pick up where that 10HP Intek left off and then some.

    The 270 was a typo, installed a Honda gx340 last night. Pics to follow later today.

    I meant no such thing as too much horsepower. 9 HP Honda GX270's are regularly used in the same applications as the 10HP Intek motors. That GX340 is going to be napping in between cycles. ;)
