Hey guys I just had a chimney sweep/repair company in town put a stainless steel reline kit in the chimney in my living room. My chimney has two openings at the top of it. He thought that one of them was for an appliance no longer in use and capped it. When I started a fire that night my whole house was filled with smoke.

He came back the next day and uncapped the second opening and we started a small fire. Smoke was coming out of BOTH of the chimney holes.

He thinks that by putting a smoke guard on the top of the hearth it will stop the smoke from rolling into the room. My question is the two flues are connected somehow if smoke is coming out of both of them and if we put the stainless steel pipe in there did we screw up the connection or the air intake? I have not been able to find any diagrams of chimneys with two flues like this one...

Also we went from a 8x8 hole to a 6.5 tube. is the decrease in size going to make the chimney not be able to keep up with the smoke being produced? Thanks for the help guys and sorry if this is full of stupid questions!

You had a 6" liner put in for that open fireplace? If so it will never work simply not enough volume. And i am curious why would he cap something when he only thought it was for an unused appliance? I would not trust that sweep i am sorry.

I hate to say it but it sounds like the fellow doesn't know his business. Even an 8x8 tile is small on a fireplace. It wouldn't surprise me if both flues service this fireplace in order to get to the capacity necessary to move the air and smoke. I would get a csia certified sweep to inspect.
