Just had the chimney swept 2 weeks ago, all went well.
Last night the temps fell to about 40 so I thought it would be
a good time for a test burn. 5 small pieces of red oak and
30 mins later the stove was cruising at 350, felt really good.

The concern is the smell, this is the first time since having the
liner swept yearly, that the stove has a 'new stove' smell while
heating up.

any ideas???

Burning off dust that has settled on it during the off season? Bring it up to 500 and be done with it.

I Like the way that was put. I will let it open up on another cool night, when we have one that is. The temps are supposed to be up in the high 80's again this week. :(

Happens the first time I fire them every year.

+1 . . . happens every year . . . with both the oil boiler and the woodstove.
