We are looking to put a wood stove in our living room and run a double wall pipe through the existing masonry chimney (which is smack dab in the middle of our Ameican Foursquare house). We don't have 6" of clearance between where the pipe would go in the masonry chimney, and an adjacent combustible wall - more like 4-5". One stove shop threw up their hands at this, but another insists we can use Class A into the room and use an adapter to connect to the stove. Who is right? Are there any downsides or issues to be aware of using this approach?

Other details in case they matter - not set on which stove yet but leaning towards the Lopi Republic 1250; the chimney runs through the second floor and out the top of a full attic above, terminating about 4' above the point of our 8/12 hip roof.

Thank you!

Class A pipe is a lot bulkier than double wall stove pipe and it needs good support. I am wondering if a wall shield could be put on the wall adjacent to the stove pipe. Can you post a picture of the area in question?

Some pictures would help. A class a may be possible but without seeing it i cant say.

The stove would go in the corner where the bookcase currently stands; the chimney is behind the wall the bookcase is currently on. In the adjoining dining room, on the left of the photo, you can see the enclosed chimney volume behind the small secretary desk.

The combustible wall in question is the one behind the rocking chair.

Oh, and the bookcase wall is 3' long; the one behind the rocking chair is 5'; and the chimney is 16"x20" (exterior dimensions) with 3" thick bricks and with the short side facing the living room.

Yeah that is a tough one. You will need an insulated thimble to get through the wall but from there is you are less than 6" from the other wall i dont know of a way to do it.

Thanks to all for the help. We had a mason check it out, and he said we can put Class A through the side of the chimney, skipping a thimble, and put a heat shield on the other wall, and we should be good. We are looking at the Alderlea T4 as the best option since it has very small clearances.
