In The Woods
I'm looking for an estimate on what it would cost per square foot to build a small 400 sq. ft. cabin. We are in the process of milling our own wood for the siding plus the walls on the inside also we will be milling the wood for the flooring & ceiling.

4 x 4's for the piers. Things we won't have are running water or electric.

Size is 14 ft. deep x 24 ft. wide with a shed type roof, not much more I can give you until we get more specifics.

With all you are milling I bet you can pull this off for 5.00-10.00 bucks a square foot! (Mill the roof deck too) look for used windows and shingles too! (lots of new shingles out there for used prices)

By piers, do you mean it won't have a traditional concrete foundation? If so that's going to cut your cost way down.

Your biggest expense will probably be the roofing and heat source (gotta have a stove, right?), followed by windows and doors, assuming you are paying $0 in labor.

Depends a lot on how fancy you want to get with it. Anywhere from $15 (garage like) to $40 (house like) per ft2 would be my guess.

If you milled ALL the wood, you could pull that off. I'd rather toss up some metal on the roof than deck it and shingle it....especially in a damp area (the woods) where it is really hard on shingles.

Still have to deck it....But the metal makes alot of sense.

Nah...just put up some pearling to screw into. Stand 2x4s on end across the rafters...strong and easy.

I think this is the technically correct way to do it. Never seen it any other way on new construction...i suppose houses may have it as a code requirement, but I doubt he'll be pulling a permit for a cabin in the woods. It will be louder than decked when it rains though.

I found the site above then punch in some numbers, I took out what we will be doing and what we won't need, breathing a bit easier. We will sit down tonight then pick out the plan which will give us a better idea.

I figure from the above sub total we can take off a good $22-23 thousand if not more depending on how much more milling I can get done.

I figure you would go all out. How much time you have before the start date? Thats alot of money for 400.00 sq ft I would hire some part-time help and keep that mill spinning for everything!

Maybe worth it to get a part-time helper and mill it all!

The wife likes the Klondike Cabin Plan, perfect for back in the woods. Looks like this long weekend will include plenty of milling.

http://www.townandcountryplans.com/klondike.html

Plans are in the mail, 2 x 8's for the roof so it looks like I can save some money and mill then also.

This weekend will put a big dent in the siding for the outside, once we get the wood done for the outside everything for the flooring and roof will start.

Yes, it's been a few years since I've done that. The nice thing is we will be doing it for ourselves so if it is not perfect then thats fine, just need it strong and up to code. Looks like I'll be working in the woods awhile, whats another year or so.

It will go fast. Be nice to have lots of extra cants around. Once you have something squared perfect switch to mill wood.

September and October will be big months for milling, then we will have a better idea how much wood we will need next spring. What type of wood is best to use for your floor joist plus roof rafters?

I think white oak would make great floor joists. I also think you should be able to build it for under $35 / sq'

A few nice chainsaws though! :cheese: You may think about running two mills set the 390 up to! Small mill 20 inch bar. Pop the tops and first board with it and keep the 660 a little cooler.

Looks like the long weekend could be more rain, our goal was 23 - 28 boards of different widths. (Hemlock & White Pine)
