Do I need to use the metal canopy? My fireplace is recessed 3-4" into the brick surround, brick is sitting on top of a metal bars, so do I need this?

You probably don't need that decorative hood,
especially with masonry above the opening.
Looks like you have a gas log set in there, & if so,
I don't think get that area as hot as a woodfire.
