Soot. It can be caused by blocked burner ports or an incorrect air shutter setting. Make sure the air shutter is either wide open or nearly so. To get rid of those chunks of soot, first lay a drop cloth in front of the stove, carefully remove the glass & use a shop vac to suck the soot out of there. If it’s adhered to the ceramic fiber logs, a soft bristle brush works very well. Just take them outside before brushing.
