Flames on heat shield below cat on Buck91

Hello, I have a Buck 91 and the last few fires I have started always wind up with flames on top of the heat/flame shield. What causes this and can it ruin my cat. Or is it already dead and that's why I have the flames.?

sorry for late reply, but yes it was. thinking maybe too many small splits? Just a guess on my part. Thanks

How small were the splits? The big belly of that stove will like thicker splits as long as they are fully seasoned.
