Do you have to have a hearth in front of a gas fireplace ? A new home dose not have a hearth in front of his non vented gas fireplace . The builder says its not required.

Not an expert on gas appliances, but the requirements should clearly be spelled out in the manual for the unit. The manual is supposed to be given to the purchaser for his records, so this should be easy to check. If the manual wasn't supplied, it should be possible to download one from the manufacturer, or get one sent to you.

My understanding is that gas appliances have lower requirements than electrics, but I don't know the details, which also probably vary by manufacturer and model.

Many gas fireplaces have NO Hearth requirements. Check the installation manual.
